2025 ROUND 2 - SYDNEY MOTORSPORT PARK - REPORT
Written by Riccardo Benvenuti.
A competitive grid of 11 Supersports and 7 Prototypes lined up for the third round of the NSW MA State Championship, promising a great day of racing.
Stephen Champion set the tone early in qualifying, storming to outright pole with a 1:30.0645. He was flanked by John Paul Drake, who topped the Prototype class, while Carmelo Bonaventura and Warwick Morris filled out row two. The talent-packed third row featured Jason Makris and Mark Brame, while Ibby Haddid, Shaun Hannah, Darren Barlow, and Simon Copping rounded out the top ten.
Race 1: A False Start to the Weekend Drama struck immediately in Race 1, with a lap-one incident triggering the safety car. No sooner had the race restarted than chaos erupted again—this time at the start-finish line, resulting in a multi-car collision that forced officials to abort the race. Among those sidelined for the remainder of the day were invited driver Isaac McNeill, Mick McMillan, and Simon Copping. A tough break for many hopefuls.
Race 2 delivered the first full tilt of the day. Makris launched brilliantly, charging ahead of Drake and Champion to seize the early lead. Behind them, Bonaventura kept Champion under pressure, while Barlow was lurking, ready to pounce. Makris’s charge, however, was cut short by mechanical gremlins, forcing him to retire and gifting Drake the lead with Laucke steadily reeling him in.
Meanwhile, the fight for third ignited—both Bonaventura and Barlow managing to muscle past Champion in a heated exchange. Further back, thrilling scraps unfolded as Julian Newton and Dyson duked it out, with Hannah, Steve Roberts, and Kirk Batchelor close behind. Drake ultimately held off Laucke for the win, with Bonaventura securing third outright—and top Supersports honours. Barlow claimed fourth, and Champion salvaged fifth. A heartfelt shout-out to Warwick Morris for his 50th start in the NSW Supersports Championship—a true milestone.
In Race 3, Barlow and Laucke got the jump at lights out, closely tailed by Bonaventura and Drake. But it was Brame who emerged as the early charger—slicing past Bonaventura and then Barlow to snatch the lead. The drama didn’t end there: on lap three, Bonaventura attempted an opportunistic move into Turn 2, catching Barlow’s rear left and sending him into a spin. Though both continued, Bonaventura dropped spots, while Barlow was left to claw back from the rear.

The mayhem wasn’t over for Barlow: soon after, he narrowly avoided disaster when a car flew in hot from the infield grass, forcing him to take evasive action to avoid a T-bone collision.
Gary Patel then stole the spotlight. He hunted down Laucke and seized the Prototype lead in the closing laps. Brame held strong to take third (1st Supersports), followed by a recovering Bonaventura in fourth, and Dyson Song rounding out the top five.
